After a successful Kickstarter campaign to publish Osamu Tezuka's Unico and Atom Cat, the folks at DMP have announced an even more ambitious goal: publishing Tezuka's Triton of the Sea. Triton, which ran daily in Sankei Shimbun from 1969 to 1971, is a rollicking fantasy-adventure for kids. Though Tezuka borrowed character names from classical mythology, the story is purely his own, featuring talking sea-creatures and a bad guy who looks like a cross between Tony the Tiger and Spike the bulldog.
DMP is requesting another $21,000 from manga lovers to bring Triton to North America. The wording on the campaign website is a little confusing, as DMP simply revised its original Unico Kickstarter page to reflect its new funding goal. As best I could tell, pledging $50 entitles a reader to volume one of Triton; pledging $100 entitles a reader to both volumes. Here's how DMP explained its latest fundraising effort:
Since this goal is so much higher, we'll be doing things a bit differently. If we hit $47,000, anyone who pledges $50 or more will receive Vol. 1, and anyone who pledges $100 or more will receive both volumes. More rewards will be added soon, but if you just want the books, you won't have to do anything if you're already pledging at high enough levels!
I'm interpreting that to mean that anyone who already pledged at least $50 for Unico and/or Atomcat will receive a copy of Triton ' provided, of course, that DMP raises $47,000.
With eighteen days to go, DMP has raised $29,667, making it likely that DMP will be bringing three new Tezuka titles to the US in 2013. You can make a pledge ' and view images from Triton of the Sea ' by visiting the project's Kickstarter page. For more information about the series, visit Tezuka in English.
